Rajkot

Rajkot is the 4th largest city in the state of Gujarat and it is located on the banks of the Aji River and Niari River. It was founded by Thakur Saheb Vibhaji Ajoji Jadeja of Jadeja clan in 1612 AD and since then, it has been the seat of Jadeja rulers of India. Mahatma Gandhi spent the early days of his life here while completing his education in one of the schools here. The city is famous for jewelry, silk embroidery and watch parts. It is also famous for its gold purity and has one of the biggest gold markets of Gujarat, called Soni Bazaar.

Places to visit in Rajkot

  • Rotary Dolls Museum – As the name suggests the place is a doll museum and is a must visit if you have daughters.
  • Aji Dam – It is the main water supply of the city and has beautiful garden, zoo and a park for children just outside of the dam. It is a picnic spot.
  • Rajkumar College – The College is regarded as one of the India’s best private college and it dates back to 19th century. It was established by the British government for education of Indian princes.
  • Alfred High School – Mohandas Gandhi or Mahatma Gandhi studied here while his father worked in princely state. The name has been changed to Mohandas Gandhi High School in his memory.
  • Watson Museum – The place commemorates the work of Colonel John Watson from 1886 to 1889. It has collection with the 3rd century inscriptions and a delicate ivory work overseen by a marble of Queen Victoria.
  • Kaba Gandhi Na Delo – This is the place where Mahatma Gandhi lived from age of six. The place has a collection of things relating to him. His legacy of making clothes on handloom is being preserved by a small school there.

How to reach Rajkot

Rajkot is 225 km away from Dwarka. There are regular buses and trains available connecting both the places. Rajkot domestic airport is also connects it to major cities of India.
